Levels of Care

Every level of care serves a defined clinical purpose, and clients move between them as their needs change.

The space between acute hospitalization and traditional outpatient treatment is where recovery is most vulnerable. Odyssey Behavioral Healthcare was built to bridge that gap with a full continuum of behavioral health care, from medical detoxification and inpatient treatment through residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and virtual programming. Each level of care serves a defined clinical purpose, and Odyssey’s treatment brands allow clients to move through them within the same organization as their needs evolve.

Levels of Care at Odyssey Behavioral Healthcare

  • Medical Detoxification

Medically supervised withdrawal management providing 24-hour clinical monitoring and stabilization. Detox is the entry point for clients whose substance use requires medical support before they can safely begin active treatment programming. Once stabilized, clients transition into residential or outpatient care.

Available at Lifeskills Behavioral Health in Florida and STR Behavioral Health in Pennsylvania.

  • Inpatient Treatment

Hospital-level care with 24/7 medical and nursing supervision, medication management, and medical nutrition support, including NG tube feeding. Inpatient treatment serves clients with eating disorders who require the highest level of medical stabilization before stepping down to residential care.

Available at Selah House in Indiana.

  • Residential Treatment

24-hour structured care in a live-in setting with daily clinical programming, individual and group therapy, and around-the-clock support. Residential treatment serves clients who need an immersive treatment environment with consistent clinical structure. Each client’s diagnosis, acuity, and clinical progress determine the length of stay.

Available across multiple Odyssey treatment brands and locations.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program

A structured day program typically meeting five or more days per week, providing intensive clinical programming while allowing clients to return home or to supportive housing in the evenings. PHP serves as both a step-down from residential treatment and a direct entry point for clients whose acuity requires more intensity than outpatient care but not 24-hour residential support.

Available across multiple Odyssey treatment brands and locations.

  • Intensive Outpatient Program

Flexible outpatient programming meeting several hours per week, designed for clients who need active clinical support while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. IOP is available as a step-down from PHP or as a primary entry point for clients whose clinical needs are best served at the outpatient level.

Available across multiple Odyssey treatment brands and locations.

  • Virtual Outpatient

Evidence-based outpatient treatment delivered through a secure, HIPAA-compliant online platform. Odyssey Virtual Behavioral Healthcare provides virtual intensive outpatient programming for adults with mental health conditions, offering the same clinical standards as in-person programs with the flexibility of location-independent access.

Currently available in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia, with expansion planned.

  • Transitional Living + Supportive Housing

Supervised residential housing options that support clients stepping down from higher levels of care. Transitional living provides structured support as clients rebuild daily routines and independent living skills. Supportive housing offers a stable residential environment alongside outpatient programming for clients who need housing support without 24-hour clinical oversight.

    Available at select Odyssey facilities.

How Odyssey Matches Clients to the Right Level of Care

The goal is to match clients to the right intensity from the start, not to default to the highest or most available level.

Odyssey’s admissions teams evaluate each client’s diagnosis, acuity, substance use history, medical needs, geographic preferences, and insurance coverage to identify the level of care that fits their clinical situation.

As treatment progresses, clients can step through levels of care within the same organization. A client who begins in residential treatment can transition to PHP, then IOP, then virtual, maintaining clinical continuity and treatment momentum without starting over with a new provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

What levels of care does Odyssey offer?

Odyssey’s treatment brands offer medical detoxification, inpatient treatment, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and virtual programming, with transitional living and supportive housing available at select facilities. Specific levels of care vary by brand and location.

What is the difference between residential treatment and PHP?

Residential treatment provides 24-hour structured care in a live-in setting with daily clinical programming and around-the-clock support. PHP is a structured day program that provides intensive clinical programming during the day, with clients returning home or to supportive housing in the evenings. PHP is typically the next step down from residential treatment and offers comparable clinical intensity without the overnight component.

What is the difference between PHP and IOP?

PHP is a structured day program typically meeting five or more days per week with full-day clinical programming. IOP is a flexible outpatient program meeting several hours per week, designed for clients who need active clinical support while maintaining daily responsibilities like work, school, or family life. IOP offers less clinical intensity than PHP but more structure and support than weekly outpatient therapy.

How does Odyssey determine which level of care a client needs?

Odyssey’s admissions teams evaluate each client’s diagnosis, acuity, substance use history, medical needs, geographic preferences, and insurance coverage to identify the most appropriate level of care. The goal is clinical matching, not defaulting to the highest available level. As treatment progresses, clients can step through levels of care within the same organization as their clinical needs evolve.

Can clients move between levels of care within Odyssey?

Yes. Odyssey’s treatment brands collectively offer a full continuum of care, which allows clients to step down from more intensive levels to less intensive levels within the same organization. This built-in continuum maintains clinical continuity and treatment momentum. A client who begins in residential treatment can transition to PHP, then IOP, then virtual programming without starting over with a new provider.

Does Odyssey offer virtual treatment?

Yes. Odyssey Virtual Behavioral Healthcare delivers structured, evidence-based mental health treatment through a secure online platform. The program is currently available in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia, with expansion planned to additional states. Virtual programming follows the same clinical standards as all Odyssey treatment programs.

Does insurance cover all levels of care?

Odyssey’s treatment brands accept in-network, out-of-network, and private pay options that vary by location and level of care. Coverage for specific levels of care depends on the client’s insurance plan and benefits. Odyssey’s admissions teams provide benefits assessments and work with clients and their families to determine coverage and payment options for the recommended level of care.

Not sure which level of care fits?

Odyssey’s admissions teams help match clients to the right level based on diagnosis, acuity, and clinical needs.
